Word and Action’s Response to the 2021 Earthquake in Haiti
On August 14, 2021, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck Haiti, killed more than 2,000 people and left over 500,000 individuals physically injured. The number of mentally traumatized individuals as a result of recurring deadly natural catastrophes in Haiti is incalculable. The situation on the ground is heartbreaking with many families in dire need of food, water, shelter and medical attention. Word and Action, Inc. (W&A) is closely working with other organizations to provide immediate care and mental health support for families, who are still recovering and healing from previous natural disasters.
W&A has a history of providing mental health and/or psychosocial support for natural disaster victims. For instance, we were able to assist more than 700 individuals and victims of the January 12, 2010 earthquake. We’ve also provided short-term psychological supports to at least a dozen young girls who were sexually abused while living in tent cities in Port-au-Prince after the deadly quake. On November 2016, we have provided more than 500 families with a combination of hygiene, school, and food kits. The hygiene kits consisted of soaps, toothbrushes, toothpastes, deodorants, shampoos, wipes, baby bottles, and baby clothes. The school kits included crayons, pens, pencils, and school bags. The food kits contained baby foods, oil, rice, milk powder, and aquatab. We are committed to doing even more this year, by implementing long-term care even after the spotlights are gone and the international NGOs leave Haiti.
In the past we worked with and closely trained healthcare providers, local organizations, students, teachers, youth parliamentarians, community leaders, lawyers, journalists and other professionals. We thank all donors who’ve supported us in the past in securing and protecting children from exploitation, abuse, and human trafficking. This year we want to leave an even greater impact by changing children and families lives for the best. Please donate today and become a partner for change.
